Designers obsess over which hide to use. Fewer think hard enough about when it arrives, and that second decision quietly wrecks more production schedules than the wrong grain ever will.

Overseas sourcing looks cheaper on a spreadsheet. Then you add the lead time, the minimum orders, the customs hold nobody warned you about, and the reorder that takes eight weeks when you needed it in two. The gap is wider than most first-time brands expect: a full overseas apparel timeline typically runs 12 to 20 weeks door to door versus roughly 3 to 6 weeks domestically, and that's before you've even sourced the material. A supplier with real stock on the ground changes that math in ways you don't feel until you've missed a delivery window once.

You see the hide before you commit

A photo is a promise. A hide in your hands is a fact. Natural leather varies from side to side, and the difference between a swatch on a screen and the actual piece you'll cut is exactly the kind of thing that turns a beautiful sample into a disappointing run.

No minimum order

Overseas mills often won't talk to you under a large minimum. That's fine for a mature brand placing bulk orders and brutal for an emerging designer, a sample line, or a limited run.

United has no minimum order quantity. Buy the sides you need for the project in front of you, whether that's forty hides for a production run or one for a sample. The economics that lock smaller designers out elsewhere don't apply here, which is the point: the next generation of designers should be able to source the same quality the established brands do, without a minimum standing in the way.

Reorders happen close to home

The moment a brand starts to scale, one question decides everything: can you get the same leather again, quickly. A hero product that sells out is only good news if you can make more before the demand cools.

Because the stock is here in Los Angeles, a reorder isn't crossing an ocean and a customs queue. An imported reorder carries 3 to 5 weeks of ocean freight and another 1 to 2 weeks of customs before the leather even reaches you. Ours is already in the building, so getting more of the same article is a matter of days, not seasons. That speed is the whole argument for sourcing close to home.
